Recognizing the need for an accurate, low-cost device to complement existing options for breast cancer detection, Medical Tactile, Inc. (MTI) sought to use tactile sensing to detect differences in tissue hardness, one of the key indicators of cancerous lesions. In order to do this, MTI needed a tactile array sensor with unparalleled sensitivity and repeatability.
Using PPS' TactArray sensor technology, MTI has produced SureTouch, the world's first FDA cleared device using tactile sensing for breast cancer documentation. PPS engineers developed a system giving performance nearly 5 times more sensitive than the human sense of touch in detecting lesions under the skin's surface. The T4000 forms the key enabling technology for the SureTouch System, which received FDA clearance for documentation in February 2003.
