Tactile Input Devices with PPST-MIDT

As consumer devices continue to pack more and more functionality into smaller and smaller forms, designers are asked to make serious tradeoffs between form and function. With such advanced needs, traditional input device technology is not able to fill the bill. In response to this growing market, PPS has developed Tactile Input Device technology that can replicate the ideal and most intuitive input method for each function while offering reduced device complexity, lower costs, and more versatile design integration. In 2008, Pressure Profile Systems spun off a new subsidiary, PPST-MIDT, to establish capacitive-based tactile sensing as an embedded technology for the personal mobile device and consumer electronics markets. The videos below show examples of two Tactile Input Device platforms currently available.

Reconfigurable Tactile Input Device (4:22)
  • Reconfigurable input area without touch screen
  • Tactile input enables 3D force gestures
  • Works with finger or stylus
  • Rejects accidental activation
  • Supports multi-touch
  • Currently available
Force Sensitive Touch Screen (1:52)
  • Replace touchscreens with force-sensitive equivalent using 4 tactile sensors
  • Tactile input enables 3D force gestures
  • Works with finger or stylus
  • Currently available
